Description

This workshop introduces students to the art of writing "sudden" fiction --short stories of less than 1,000 words. In addition to the basic elements of fiction, students will study symbolism, spare prose, selective omission and subtext as key devices of the genre. Students will read and analyze short fiction by writers including Raymond Carver, Grace Paley, Langston Hughes, Ernest Hemingway, Jamaica Kinkaid and Joyce Carol Oates. They will participate in group critique and feedback as they craft original short stories. (This course iscross-listed with JRN 3615. Students will receive credit for either ENG 3615 or JRN 3615. These courses may substitute for each other in the F-replacement policy.)
