This course investigates whether there is a modal or normative American personality. Are there common values of United States culture, such as the work ethic, materialism, and youth-centeredness? Are significant bio-social attributes, such as age, gender, ethnicity, religion and socio-economic status related to cultural values and standards of behavior? To what extent do the family, schools, the workplace and other social institutions shape personality? Are there pathologies such as narcissism, violence, and retreat from intimacy that are culturally determined?
