Description

This course explores the American musical from nineteenth-century minstrelsy, vaudeville, operetta, and burlesque, through its golden age (1930-1950). Attention then turns to the stylistic and sociopolitical development of the genre since World War II. The final portion of the course will consider recent developments, including the rock musical, the mega musical, and the musical's relationship to film.
