Overview
Description
This course is a survey of French cinema from its beginnings until the present time. We will begin with the work of the Lumire brothers and Mlis, through the golden age of French cinema in the 1930s, the period during and after the Second World War, and to the New Wave and beyond. We will consider the aesthetic as well as the socio-political and historical aspects of films. The filmmakers studied will include, among others, Jean Renoir, Franois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Agns Varda, Robert Bresson, Jean-Pierre Melville and Claude Chabrol. This course is cross-listed with FLM 3151. Students will receive credit for LTT 3151 or FLM 3151. These courses may not substitute for each other in the F grade replacement policy.
