Description
This course examines the revolutionary plays of Ibsen, Strindberg, Chekhov, and Shaw and their achievements in destroying old forms and creating twentieth-century drama. It considers the social, political, and psychological ideas advanced by these thinkers and shows how they shaped the thinking and made possible the achievements of other important modern playwrights, such as Eugene O'Neill, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Lillian Hellman, and J.P. Sartre. The emphasis throughout is on analysis of representative plays.
